Transition

 

Thursday 17 January, 10am to 12pm

with Crystal Minors, Merton SEND Team Manager and David Cafferty, Team Manager, Merton Team for People with Learning Disabilities and Transitions

Find out what support Merton can offer young people with SEN or disabilities aged 14 to 25 transitioning into adulthood. This session will be particularly relevant to parents/carers of children who are currently eligible for children’s social care (not just Short Breaks) and who are expecting to transition into Adult Social Care e.g. children with a learning disability (LD) and complex needs including severe and profound LD.

Merton’s SEN Information, Advice and Support Service

with Fran Turko, the new MIASS Manager and Nicole Ashbolt-Collings (Post-16 Advisor)

MIASS provides free impartial advice and guidance to parents/carers of children with special educational needs (SEN) and to children and young people with SEN, in matters relating to education, health and social care. This includes information about the SEN assessment process and support at meetings. Come and meet Fran and Nicole to find out more about the service, the referral process and the types of issues they can help you with.

Confidence and assertiveness at meetings

 

Tuesday 5 February, 9.30am to 1pm

for Kids First members, steering group members and parent representatives, with Janey Bell, Professional Trainer in Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Are you a parent of a child with special educational needs or disabilities and … Do you ever feel uncertain in school meetings? Are you too nervous to raise issues with teachers? Not assertive enough to stand up for your child? Or are you a Kids First Steering Group member or parent representative and… Want to learn skills to increase your confidence and assertiveness at meetings and learn how to challenge decisions by using simple questioning techniques? If you have answered yes to any of the above, then this session is for you! Learn skills and explore strategies to increase your confidence so you can represent your child, and our membership effectively.

Short Breaks

 

Thursday 14 March, 10am to 12pm

with Michelle Butcher, Merton’s Short Breaks Team Leader

Short Breaks give children and young people with Special Educational Needs and disabilities the chance to do something they enjoy and also give parents time away from caring. A Short Break can be offered by a wide range of providers, or families may choose to organise their own Short Breaks through a direct payment. Come along and find out more about this service, including the current eligibility criteria for families to access Short Breaks.
