Independent Travel Training

 

Tuesday 18 September, 10am to 12pm

with Sally Taylor, SEN Transport Co-ordinator, SENDIS and Jane Birchmore, Travel Trainer, Merton Mencap

Merton Council commissions Merton Mencap to train young people with learning disabilities/autism to become independent travellers for their journey between home & their place of education. To be eligible for the service children should be between the age of 12 & 24, have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP), have the potential to become an independent traveller & be potentially eligible for Merton Transport. Find out more & hear from a parent whose child is now an independent traveller as a result of receiving training.

Neurodevelopmental Pathway for diagnostic assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Following the engagement sessions last year, our health service commissioners from Merton CCG are returning to tell us about their plans for the neurodevelopmental pathway for diagnostic assessment of ASD/ADHD in Merton.

Meet the Therapists, Central London Community Healthcare (CLCH)

 

Thursday 4 October, 10am to 12pm

with therapists from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, paediatric dietetics and speech and language therapy, plus Ruth Gladwell, Locality Lead for Integrated Complex Needs, Merton Community Services.

CLCH have been delivering community services in Merton since April 2016 and are responsible for the majority of NHS community healthcare services for children and adults in Merton. They offer a range of therapies especially for children with disabilities, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, paediatric dietetics and speech and language therapy. Meet the therapists and find out how they can help your child.

Exclusions, Disability Discrimination and the Equality Act

Children with special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities are much more likely to be excluded from school than their classmates. There are only two types of exclusion from a school which are lawful: permanent and fixed-period. Too many children & young people with SEN and disabilities are excluded illegally which may amount to disability discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. Greg will explain the law around this topic & answer your questions.

SEN Mediation - a disagreement resolution service

 

Monday 26 November, 10am to 12pm with Global Mediation, Merton’s Mediation Service Local Authorities are legally obliged to provide SEN mediation and disagreement resolution in relation to disputes with parents, carers & young people. Mediation aims to help resolve disagreements for children and young people that are being assessed for, or have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Global Mediation provide this free service in Merton. Hear from one of their in-house mediators about the process of mediation and how it can help to settle disagreements that arise between parents & local authorities/schools.
